Doctor Thorne, the third novel in Anthony Trollope's Chronicles of Barsetshire, steers away from the church politics featured in the first two novels and move towards the scandals and prejudice of the upper tiers of Victorian era aristocracies. Frank Gresham, only son of a bankrupt landowner, falls in love with the impoverished and illegitimate Mary Thorne. His aristocratic mother forbids the match, steering him to other, richer, prospects. Only Dr. Thorne, Mary's loving uncle, knows the truth of her impending inheritance.
