Harlem Nocturne Herbie Fields
Harlem Nocturne
Herbie Fields
Herbie Fields was a New York-based multi-instrumentalist who played clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone. In the early 1940's he played with some of the best jazz musicians in the world - Don Byas, Coleman Hawkins and Dexter Gordon, to name a few. While working a four week engagement at the Preview Lounge in Chicago in the spring of 1953, Fields recorded the classic sides presented here. Joining Fields, who played alto, tenor and baritone sax on the recordings are: Jimmy Nottingham (trumpet), Joe Black (piano) and Rudy Cafaro (electric guitar). The bassist, drummer and trombonist remain unidentified. Fields' version of "Harlem Nocturne" was a jukebox hit in 1953 - presented here is the original single coupled with the fine "Mr. Jump." Newly remastered.
