Calligraphy
Dave Chisholm
An evocative blend of expansive post-rock with open-ended jazz structures resulting in music both fresh and familiar, with gorgeous harmonies, catchy melodic hooks, compelling band interplay, and impassioned improvisation intertwined with appealingly mysterious song structures. This compiles the core of trumpet player/composer Dave Chisholm's second full-length album Calligraphy (November 2011). It's raw emotional content taken in combination with it's lush instrumentation will appeal across genre boundaries. This album would effectively fit within an indie-rock or a modern jazz playlist, all while expanding any listener's horizon. Dave Chisholm's forward-thinking and cinematic album will appeal to fans of such post-rock bands as Sigur Ros, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, and Mogwai, as well as fans of such Jazz artists as Miles Davis, Christian Scott, and Dave Douglas. Dave is currently a doctoral student in Jazz Studies at the prestigious Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Jazz will forever be close to his heart. The open-ended structures and spontaneity that improvisation allowed have appealed to him for most of his life. His debut full-length album, Radioactive (July 2010), compiled of original compositions for jazz big band, was received with critical acclaim. From 2005-2007, he toured extensively with indie-rock darlings The Brobecks, forever solidifying his love of poppy hooks and the concise directness of rock and pop music. Calligraphy blends Dave's dual histories. Simultaneously tightly organized and unpredictable, Calligraphy's slow builds and strong melodies are immediately appealing, but it's clever musical structures and virtuosic improvisation create a lasting musical interest. Dave Chisholm's Calligraphy leaves a lasting impression. It's mysteries last, magnetically drawing listeners back time and time again. The combination of the immediacy of pop with the depth of jazz is the genius of it's conception.
