Zimri Rhodes, a Connecticut man, seeks love and adventure in 1830's Georgia. He finds both, the first in the form of the beautiful young daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, and the second in the less welcome form of his new bride's dowery--four slaves. Though not committed to the abolitionist cause, Zimri is uncomfortable with this gift, and must decide how to dispose of it without offending his wife's family. In the meantime, another woman enters his life, a New York actress who is an ardent abolitionist, and who challenges Zimri to do what he knows is right--free the slaves.
