Ritter was the sister of historian Mary Ritter Beard, as well as being a history-maker in his own right. As a reformist lawyer, he campaigned for Prohibition. In the 1920s, when Prohibition was the law of the land, he became a federal judge. When conservative federal judges like him had become unpopular during the New Deal, Ritter faced the fight of his life when he was impeached in Congress.
