Living in the herd mentality of 1957, not only are Breed and his friends treated like the scum of the earth, a child molesting psychopath wants to cut their ears off. If they do nothing, they will be imprisoned in Traptown's drudgery and live in fear for the rest of their lives. Retaining humor and a vitality otherwise lacking in their slum neighborhood, they build a junk boat, go hurling into the night, and land in the paradise of Shell Island. Here, these loveable characters want to close the bridge to the cyclical sameness of violence and stampede into a new future, but river gangs, crooked cops, and sickos, who use puppies for baseballs block their way.




Using a smorgasbord of characters and the vernacular of the times, Myers creates absolute reality and serves us a slice of humor-sprinkled American history never presented before. "Yeah, that's how it was!"... Based upon the early lives of deprived adolescents caught in an environment riddled with child molesters - that will cut their ears off - river polluters, crooked cops, and road hugging cars full of cigarette smoking, beer can sucking gangs of degenerate, rebellious youths, these undesirable foul-mouthed, but loveable, Traptown kids are constantly beat down. Single handedly they pop back up, fool their adversaries, and find out physical strength doesn't last; and mental strength lasts forever. And it pays.
