Laney Todd has grown in up Thatcher, a small town in South Carolina where she had to deal with everyday prejudice and down south racism. The only real friends she has are Mike, the only other biracial person around and Blair. Together, they tackle high school and when Laney falls in love for the first time, they find that as bad as they thought it was in Thatcher, it was only going to get worse. Laney learns that life only gets harder as you get older and that life can deal you a bad hand when it feels like it.
