Management of Pay in an Ailing Economy: the Impact of Wage Fragmentation on Industrial Conflict (1975- 2000)

About this book The literature on the Sugar Industry in Guyana is exhaustive but not complete. The main reason for this attention from so many scholars is because of the nature of this vital industry and its place in the country's economy - the very lifeblood so to speak. In fact the industry has been described as 'the commanding height of the economy' Perhaps too, lessons learnt from the Guyana situation have implications for many Caribbean countries as well. It seems from the research that the sugar industry is forever haunted by slavery, exploitation, manipulation, confrontation and mismanagement and modern sugar has become more bitter than sweet. This book revisits some of the foundations which beset the industry and continues to threaten its existence. It offers ways to considerably reduce if not eliminate some of them. The writer identifies pay as the all -encompassing, motivational and enveloping issue which if addressed seriously implemented might achieve the desirable outcomes and focus on preservation rather than complete abandonment of this major economic resource.
